5 reasons why you need to prioritize sleep in 2021
I think we can all agree that 2020 is not the best year. A global pandemic, Banned international travels, cities going into locked down, businesses closing down, and the unemployment rate skyrocketed.
We are facing challenges that we might never face before. Sleep has become more critical than ever before. Here are the 5 reasons why you need to prioritize your sleep in 2021.
Number 1 – Stronger mental health
We all know how our emotions play up when we are not getting enough sleep. Frustration, anger, irritation are all the negative emotions that don’t help the situation much. Especially now our mental health has been put to the test with what’s going on in the world at the moment.
While it’s not entirely understood that sleep and mental are connected, we know how they influenced one another. While anxiety can prevent you from getting restful sleep, we know lack of sleep doesn’t help your pressure. My point is that good restful sleep is the right direction for better mental health.
Number 2 – Stronger Immune system
During this global pandemic, everyone is worried about the virus and their immune system. One thing we know is that your immune system relies heavily on your quality of sleep. Lack of sleep weakens your immune system and makes it harder to fight off viruses and infection.
What it means is that lack of sleep makes you vulnerable to infection and inflammation. Having a weak immune system also affects how your body responds to a vaccine. A vaccine that is effective for everyone, it might get you sick.
That is why it is essential to ensure your sleep is protected; hence your immune system is protected.
Number 3 – Better focus and productivity
Now with most office workers working from home, focus and productivity are a big concern for employers. With so many distractions at home, it could affect the performance of your team quite dramatically. Having a lack of sleep doesn’t help one focus leading to low productivity and performance.
“Making it more of a priority for you to get enough sleep can improve not only your mood but perhaps inter-personally, your cognition. So how quickly you respond, your reaction when you’re talking or driving, memory and concentration [are impaired by lack of sleep],” says Dr. Conroy.
Number 4 – Lower risk of heart disease
Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, hypertension, and inflammation(along with other risks). Sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea are associated with heart disease risk; most patients show a link between their conditions that involve low sleep quality and heart health.
Number 5 – Better and Healthier lifestyle
If you are always a good sleeper, you are likely to make better food choices. There is also research that shows a molecular link between lack of sleep and weight gain.
Plenty of exercise and a healthy diet are the key factors for diabetes and preventing obesity. Also, your sleep quality affects how your body metabolizes glucose. Hence poor sleep weakens your body’s ability to break down your blood sugar, therefore, causing you to gain weight.
So there you have it. Here are the 5 reasons why you should prioritize your sleep in 2021.
